Backend Engineer, Fundamentals
LaunchDarkly
About the Job:
LaunchDarkly is looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to play a key role in shaping the future of how software is built within LaunchDarkly on the Fundamentals team. LaunchDarkly is at a transformative stage, building new products that enables engineering teams to release software faster, and with more confidence.
The Fundamentals team is integral to this evolution, creating internal tools and systems that empower our product engineering teams to deliver these exceptional products. Our mission is to build new internal services, software engineering practices and abstractions from which the entire engineering team will adopt and benefit. You are passionate about helping other engineers be more effective and have a systems approach to how you think. Your success will require a deep understanding of how software is built at LaunchDarkly, spot common patterns to codify, provide new paved paths, and advocate for broad adoption of new capabilities by other engineering teams.
We extensively use the products we build, ensuring that our own software takes full advantage of the new products and features we release for our customers.
If you’re ready to make a meaningful impact and help us build the future of software engineering, we’d love to hear from you!
Responsibilities:
-
Architect, implement, support, and maintain internal services, abstractions, and best practices that accelerate product engineering.
-
Analyze and understand existing engineering workflows to identify opportunities for improvement and codify common patterns.
-
Lead cross-functional projects from technical design to production release, collaborating with product and platform engineering teams.
-
Provide guidance and mentorship to other engineers, promoting best practices and improving overall code quality.
-
Champion new internal capabilities and drive their adoption by product teams, often requiring influence without direct authority.
About You:
-
You are a strategic thinker with the ability to see the big picture while paying attention to the details that drive quality.
-
You thrive in ambiguity and excel at identifying high-leverage opportunities.
-
You are a natural mentor and collaborator, driven by a desire to empower others.
-
You lead with curiosity, humility, and a commitment to excellence.
Qualifications:
-
8+ years of experience in backend software engineering, with a deep understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native development (we use AWS).
-
Expert-level proficiency in backend programming in Go (Golang).
-
Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, including designing, maintaining, and scaling infrastructure for cloud-native applications.
-
Proven ability to design scalable software systems and abstractions used by other teams.
-
Track record of leading large, cross-team projects and mentoring engineers.
-
Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with a proven track record of influencing without direct authority.

About LaunchDarkly:
Modern software delivery was supposed to be the foundation for a thriving digital business but reality has proven otherwise. Slow, inefficient development cycles, costly outages, and fragmented customer experiences are preventing developers from building their best software. The LaunchDarkly platform helps developers innovate on new features faster while protecting them with a safety valve to instantly rewind when things go wrong. Developers can target product experiences to any customer segment and maximize the business impact of every feature. And by gradually rolling out new application components, they escape nightmare "big-bang" technology migrations.
The LaunchDarkly platform was built to guide engineers to the next frontier of DevOps by:
- Improving the velocity and stability of software releases, without the fear of end customer outages
- Delivering targeted experiences by easily personalizing features to customer cohorts
- Maximizing the business impact of every feature through the ability to experiment and optimize
- Coordinating the release and optimization of software to provide consistent experiences across mobile platforms and device types
- Improving the effectiveness and productivity of engineering teams, by providing insights into engineering cadence and stability
